Riverside, Ca- On Monday May 30, 2005, at
about 10:50 P.M. A Riverside Police Officer saw a vehicle at the intersection of
3rd and Market Streets without its headlights on. The officer attempted to
initiate a traffic stop on the vehicle but the driver failed to yield initiating
a short vehicle pursuit.
During the pursuit the driver, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, failed
to stop for stop signs at two separate intersections and reached speeds in
excess of 50 mph before colliding with a traffic signal pole at Orange and 9th
Streets. The driver got out of the vehicle, failed to comply with the officers
orders, and began running from the scene. The officer gave chase on foot,
catching the driver after a few hundred yards.
Again the driver failed to comply with the officer’s orders and began struggling
with the officer. As assisting officers arrived, the driver was subdued and
handcuffed. As a result of injuries the driver sustained during the traffic
collision and the struggle with the officers, the driver lost consciousness. He
was subsequently transported via ambulance to Riverside Community Hospital where
he is listed in stable condition.
Upon his release from Riverside Community Hospital, criminal charges of PC 69
–Resisting Police Officer, CVC 2800.2 – Evading Police Officer, and CVC 20002 –
