Van Buren Blvd. blocked

Thoroughfare should be completely cleared around 3 p.m.

Riverside, Ca- Van Buren Boulevard near Coyote Bush Drive, west of Barton Road, in southeast Riverside, was closed by a fallen utility pole and a live electrical wire that crossed all lanes of traffic from 9:30 a.m. until mid-afternoon.

The westbound lane of Van Buren was opened about 2 p.m.; Southern California Edison crews hope to have the eastbound lane open by 3 p.m.

The closure followed a single-vehicle traffic collision at 9:09 a.m. A 75-year-old male driver from Murrieta driving westbound attempted a lane change but had to make a sudden return to his own lane but overcorrected. His 2002 Suzuki XL7 SUV crossed the center median and into the eastbound lanes of Van Buren. He hit a 45-foot wooden utility pole with transformers, which toppled onto two nearby vehicles on Gless Ranch property. Fallen wires lay across all lanes of traffic.

The driver was transported via AMR ambulance to Riverside Community Hospital as a precaution. No charges are anticipated.
