Barricaded suspect surrenders

Riverside, Ca- A convicted felon wanted on a parole violation warrant barricaded himself in his Gilberto Avenue home Tuesday night before surrendering peacefully to Riverside Police Department officers at 9:38 p.m.

RPD’s Parole and Corrections Team (PACT) went to the home in the 3400-block Gilberto Ave. at 5:43 p.m. Tuesday to serve a parole violation arrest warrant on David CORTEZ, 40. As the officers approached, a resident of the home alerted Cortez, who fled to the attic of the home, beginning a four-hour standoff.

A perimeter was established by Riverside Police Patrol officers established a perimeter roughly a one-block radius around the home. Three other adults came out of the house and indicated that Cortez was armed.

After repeated police attempts at contact, Cortez began talking with police negotiators by cellphone at about 9 p.m. After receiving instructions on how to leave the house without causing further problems, Cortez walked out the front door of the home and was arrested without incident at 9:38 p.m.
