Disqualifications

Each case will be reviewed on an individual basis. The areas below maybe a concern and can impact your viability.

Driving History

  • Three (3) or more moving violations within the last 4 years.
  • Two (2) or more documented at fault collisions within the last 4 years.
  • DUI convictions within the last 4 years.
  • Failure to maintain vehicle liability insurance within the last 3 years.
  • Maximum of two (2) traffic diversion schools in last 4 years.
  • History of failing to appear in court and /or failing to pay fines.
  • License suspension or revocation within the last 4 years.

 

Other Disqualifications

  • Currently on court probation.
  • Failure to register for Selective Service System (males) .
  • Convicted of misdemeanor Domestic Violence, including a lesser plea in lieu of, or fall under provisions of 12021.1 PC .
  • Failure to submit required documents in timely manner.
  • Failed drug test.
  • Inability to perform essential job functions.

Police Officer Trainee

Those applicants not meeting the minimum qualifications for Lateral / Entry Police Officer may be hired as Police Officer Trainee until successful completion of a California Basic P.O.S.T. Academy. A Police Officer Trainee is an applicant with no prior law enforcement training.

A Police Officer Entry applicant must have completed a California Basic P.O.S.T. Academy or have been employed as a full-time sworn peace officer with a State of California law enforcement agency. Those Applicants currently enrolled in a California Basic P.O.S.T. Academy may be accepted conditionally pending a successful completion of the California Basic P.O.S.T. Academy.

A Police Officer Lateral applicant must have completed a California Basic P.O.S.T. Academy and must currently be employed as a Police Officer, Deputy Sheriff or related Law Enforcement Officer with a State of California law enforcement agency.

Police Cadet

Under close general supervision, Police Cadets perform routine clerical and para-technical work associated with the various functions of the Police Department. This is a work training program for college students interested in a law enforcement career. Cadets may remain in the program until age 23 or until completion of their Bachelor's degree with Departmental approval.


Requirements

  • Minimum of 18 years of age with a maximum age of 23.

  • High school graduation or satisfactory equivalent and enrollment in a minimum of six (6) semester units in an accredited college or university with major coursework in Police Science, Administration of Justice or a closely related field.

  • Must maintain a minimum “C” or better average in the minimum (6) semester units

  • Must possess at the time of appointment a valid California Drivers License appropriate for the position.

Public Safety Dispatcher Trainee

The Public Safety Dispatcher Trainee serves as the primary link between the public and the emergency services for police, fire and medical aid. Dispatchers are expected to receive emergency and non-emergency calls from the public for the Police and Fire departments, as well as emergency calls for other City departments. Each call is evaluated and the appropriate response of city personnel and equipment is initiated. Dispatchers must maintain contact with field units and accurately record their status. Evaluations and decisions are frequently made on an independent basis with after-the-fact supervisory review. Most work is accomplished using a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. Responsibilities also include using the NCIC/CJIS systems, maintaining written radio logs or other records, and related duties as assigned. The public safety dispatcher trainee is expected to complete the training program in 9-12 months and consistently demonstrate the skills learned prior to completing probation.

Dispatchers are expected to receive emergency and non-emergency calls from the public for the Police and Fire departments, as well as emergency calls for other City departments. Each call is evaluated and the appropriate response of city personnel and equipment is initiated. Dispatchers must maintain contact with field units and accurately record their status. Evaluations and decisions are frequently made on an independent basis with after-the-fact supervisory review. Most work is accomplished using a Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) system. Responsibilities also include using the NCIC/CJIS systems, maintaining written radio logs or other records, and related duties as assigned. A Public Safety Dispatcher Lateral must have six months recent experience (within the last three years) in police/fire/military emergency vehicle dispatching.
