RIVERSIDE PUBLIC UTILITIES CUSTOMERS PLANT RECORD 13,221 SHADE TREES DURING FREE PROMOTION

7/15/2013

Riverside, Calif. – Riverside Public Utilities (RPU) customers were out in force, shovels in hand this spring as they planted more than 13,000 shade trees during the utility’s FREE Shade Tree Coupon program since March.

For 12 years RPU has printed a FREE Shade Tree Coupon on the back of its March billing statements that allow residents the chance to receive one free, qualifying shade tree (up to $25 in value) from a local nursery to plant at their home or business to help offset summer cooling costs.

The free promotion helps to educate residents about the energy savings and environmental benefits of planting properly placed shade trees, and promotes the utility’s year-round “Tree Power” shade tree rebate program, which offers RPU electric customers the chance to plant as many as five additional shade trees each year.

“It quickly turned into one of our most popular programs,” said RPU General Manager David H. Wright. “Each year, we are achieving new milestones in the number of trees planted and in the amount of energy and greenhouse gasses that are saved.”

A record 13,221 shade trees were planted in this year’s promotional period alone, which will reduce local energy use by over 2 million kilowatt hours (kWh) each year. Overall, RPU’s program has provided more than 135,000 shade trees to customers in Riverside, that beautify the community while providing over 21.3 million kWh in annual energy savings while offsetting more than 26.6 million pounds of greenhouse gas emissions each year.
