Sacred Spaces: The Work and Collection of Charles Bibbs

Friday, January 12, 2024

This landmark exhibition presents a range of paintings, drawings, prints, and unique ceramic works by Charles Bibbs. In addition, he has shared powerful works by other artists from his personal art collection. Through Sacred Spaces, Bibbs shares his lifelong love of art and the creative values that guide his work.

The Members Gallery features an array of Bibb’s iconic pieces celebrating black women and men as well as more spiritual subject matter. The upstairs galleries spotlight works chronicling the struggle for Civil Rights and social issues, as well as his collaborations with his artist friends. All the artists in this exhibition have been part of Bibbs’ development as an artist, advocate, and entrepreneur.

Through Sacred Spaces, Bibbs’ seeks to send a message about the power of art in everyday life. The artist has said that this exhibition was created in honor of people’s homes. This deep acknowledgement of the link between one’s own experience and a piece of art, and how that can be reflected and expanded on in one’s own home, is a living pathway that Bibbs recreates in this carefully selected installation of his works and collection.

NOTE: Riverside Art Museum is also open on Sundays from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM.
