The City of Riverside Fire Department Explorer Post 101 is committed to providing education, training, and a strong work ethic that prepares Fire Explorer Cadets for a future career in the Fire Service.
The Explorer Program builds character and develops leadership skills that support advancement within the Post and preparation for fire academies and other career opportunities.
Through participation in the Fire Explorer Program, individuals gain confidence, learn to operate firefighting equipment, develop mechanical skills, improve physical fitness, and expand their knowledge of the Fire Service.

Fire Explorer Requirements
- Be between the ages of 14 and 21.
- Will be required to complete CPAT and written exam.
- Pay $200 upon passing the recruitment process.
- Have no serious arrests or convictions.
- Maintain a 2.0 GPA and provide a copy of the most recent grade report.
- Be able to arrange transportation to weekly meetings and events.
- Be free of physical conditions that could cause injury to themselves or others while participating in program activities.
- Present themselves in accordance with Fire Service grooming standards.
The Written Exam
The written exam measures key skills needed for participation in the Fire Explorer Program. It includes sections on reading comprehension, spelling and grammar, basic math, and a few questions related to Post 101, Learning for Life, and the Riverside Fire Department.

Candidate Physical Abilities Test (CPAT)
The CPAT is a standardized test that evaluates whether firefighter candidates can safely perform essential physical job tasks. Developed by the IAFF and IAFC in the late 1990s, it provides a consistent and legally defensible measure of physical readiness.
Today, it is the industry standard used across the United States and Canada. It helps ensure candidates are adequately prepared for the physical demands of a firefighting career.
Physical Ability Test Events
- Start Run: Run from the Tower Gate.
- 100-foot Hose Drag: Start with the hose in a pile on the ground behind a line. Take a coupling and run with the hose until it is completely extended, then drag the hose to the other line. Turn around and pull the hose hand over hand from fully extended into a pile, keeping all hose behind the line. Repeat to return the hose to the starting position.
- Equipment Carry: Grasp two equipment items, such as jugs or weights, with one in each hand. With straight arms, carry them 50 feet to a marker, turn around, and return to the starting point.
- Sledgehammer: Swing a sledgehammer at 50% strength while striking the oversized tire. Complete 15 repetitions right-handed and 15 repetitions left-handed for a total of 30.
- Dummy Drag: Two cones are positioned 35 feet apart. Drag the dummy from the starting cone to the second cone, move the dummy around the cone, and drag it back to the starting location.
- Hydrant Cap: Remove and replace the 4-inch hydrant cap.
- Tower Climb: Carrying a 2 1/2-inch hose bundle, climb the exterior stairwell at a consistent and steady pace to the fourth floor. Exit and descend using the interior stairwell.
- Pike Pole Simulation: Simulate a pike pole using a weight bar. Thrust the weight bar upward for 15 repetitions right-handed and 15 repetitions left-handed for a total of 30.
- Finish Run: Finish at the Tower Gate.
