SMALL TABLE IN CORNER      (Picture...)

This small table, indented for the knees, could be used for writing notes. It was one of Mrs. Bettner's pieces, purchased by her for this house. On this table are some of the items specified in Polite Society at Home and Abroad: books, a lamp, stationery, and a sewing kit. The maroon stationery box is circa 1870 and may have also been Mrs. Bettner's. Note also the recommended use of delicately patterned and colored wallpaper and light curtains.

SPINNING WHEEL     (Picture...)

By the 1890s, it was not necessary for American women to spin wool in order to obtain yarn. However, spinning was a tremendously popular ladies' hobby. This popularity apparently had two roots. First, after the nation's centennial celebration, in 1876, there was a fascination with all sorts of crafts and fashions from the period of the American Revolution. Second, Queen Victoria of Great Britain was a spinner, a fact which led to further interest in the hobby.
