Riverside Fire Department Open House

To prevent injuries, property loss and loss of life due to fires and other emergency incidents, the City of Riverside Fire Department will be conducting their annual Fire Department open house on Saturday, October 14, 2017 from 11:00 am – 3 pm at five of its fire stations. October 8-14 has been designated Fire Prevention Week by the National Fire Protection Association with the goal of reducing the death toll from fire which averages 3,000 persons per year in the United States. This year’s theme is - Every Second Counts – Always Find Two Ways Out.

Here’s this year’s key campaign messages:

  • Draw a map of your home by using our grid in English (PDF) or Spanish
(PDF) with all members of your household, marking two exits from each room and a path to the outside from each exit.
  • Practice your home fire drill twice a year. Conduct one at night and one during the day with everyone in your home, and practice using different ways out.
  • Teach children how to escape on their own in case you can’t help them.
  • Make sure the number of your home is clearly marked and easy for the  fire department to find.
  • Close doors behind you as you leave – this may slow the spread of smoke, heat, and fire.

Once you get outside, stay outside. Never go back inside a burning building.

Each year the annual Fire Department Open House is held in recognition of National Fire Prevention Week, encompassing October 9, the anniversary date of the Great

Chicago Fire. The goal of the City of Riverside Fire Department’s annual Fire Open House is to educate the public on ways they can protect themselves from fire, and to showcase the City of Riverside’s Fire Department personnel and firefighting equipment and stations.

The best way to ensure the Fire Department does not need to respond to your home is to prevent a fire from occurring. Firefighters will be on hand to discuss the fire prevention theme, and to provide information about how everyone can best accomplish this goal of protecting their family from fire.

Some of the topics that will be discussed at our fire stations will include: use of fire extinguishers, proper cooking methods, electrical/extension cord hazards, tips on smoking and maintenance on smoke detectors/alarms

Fire stations and vehicles will be on display at the following stations:

Fire Station 1 – 3401 University Avenue

Fire Station 2 – 9449 Andrew Street

Fire Station 3 – 6395 Riverside Avenue

Fire Station 4 – 3510 Cranford Avenue

Fire Station 7 – 10191 Cypress Avenue
