City of Riverside Announces Artist in Residency Program
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The City of Riverside is pleased to announce an Artist in Residency (AIR) opportunity funded with federal money from the American Rescue Plan Act.
The AIR program, in partnership with the Riverside Arts Council, will build partnerships with the community to provide unique artist residencies that result in strengthening the value of art locally.
“I am incredibly proud to have championed this pilot project that will lead to six paid artists positions and 14 community-led murals across the City of Riverside,” City Councilwoman Clarissa Cervantes said. “The Eastside neighborhood has seen incredible transformations through the Riverside Art Museum’s Artist-In-Residency program which has elevated community pride, beautification, and improved public safety.”
“As the City of Arts and Innovation and as an artist myself, I believe we need to create viable economic opportunities for artists in Riverside and the Inland Empire. This fulfills our commitment to investing in the arts and creating communities of belonging that tell stories of the people and places that make Riverside so special.”
The City wants to identify six Riverside-based artists who can research and engage with City residents and then use their research to develop new murals in those neighborhoods. These murals will support the development and presentation of arts and cultural experiences and programs at and near the places where residents work and live.
Selected artists will work for about 18 months through the end of 2026. Artists will work with the Riverside Arts Council during their time in residence and on the development of their final project(s). At least one mural and four public engagements with the community are required.
The total honorarium for each artist can be up to $25,000. Payment will be issued in multiple stages based on set deliverables outlined in the agreement depending on the size, number and/or scope. The production budget for each artist will be up to $5,000, which is separate from the honorarium.
Applicants must live in Riverside and be individuals, not groups. This is a call for applications, not a call for proposals. Any application proposing a specific project/mural will be disqualified. Applications can be obtained at https://www.riversideca.gov/park_rec/arts-cultural-affairs/artists-residency and must be completed and submitted to [email protected] by Jan. 21.
Late submissions will NOT be considered. Incomplete applications or applications that do not follow the guidelines will be disqualified.
