Heritage House Celebrates Museum of Riverside’s Quilt Collection With New Exhibition
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The Museum of Riverside’s Heritage House celebrates National Quilting Month with a special exhibition, Common Threads: Quilts, Clothing, and Textiles from the Hayes Family Collection.
Opening on March 18, the exhibition will showcase the Hayes family quilts, clothing, and textiles from the Museum’s permanent collection. These objects span three generations of quilt-making by a New Hampshire family, some of whom moved to Southern California in the early twentieth century.
The founder of this quilting dynasty, Lydia Hayes (1808-1882), made a special white-on-white, double-ring patterned quilt for her 1828 marriage to Simon Hayes. This is the oldest quilt of the 19 quilts in the Hayes Family collection.
Her three daughters, Lydia Hayes Fall (1833-1861), Phebe Hayes Cate (1835-1917), and Mary Ann Hayes Fall (1845-1919); her granddaughter Katherine Augusta Fall Richmond (1866-1959); and granddaughter-in-law Hellen Cooke Neill Cate (1869-1925) continued the tradition. The Museum’s entire collection of Hayes pieced quilts and comforters will be on exhibit.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, reservations are required to tour Heritage House and see the exhibition. Tours are free, and reservations can be made on Eventbrite.com.
To celebrate National Quilting Day on Saturday, March 19, special quilting activities and demonstrations will be presented from 1-3 p.m. These free activities are appropriate for all ages.
The exhibition Common Threads: Quilts, Clothing, and Textiles from the Hayes Family Collection will close on Sunday, June 26, 2022.
