What We Do & Why
The Envision Riverside 2025 Strategic Plan, approved by the City Council in 2020, established the City’s map for desired outcomes in Sustainability including the Environmental Stewardship strategic priority, which includes six goals: a zero-carbon electric grid, management of water resources, healthy air quality, waste reduction, natural land management and community-wide carbon neutrality by 2040.
The City of Riverside’s extraordinary efforts in sustainability have contributed to the City receiving awards for its green fleet, local food system program, waste to energy co-digestion, complete streets, community engagement, and climate action plan. The City’s sustainability efforts began in 2005 with the creation of a Clean and Green Taskforce, 2007 Sustainability Policy Statement, its first LEED certified building in 2010, a subregional Climate Action Plan in 2014, and the City’s first Climate Action Plan in January 2016.
