Power outages can happen due to an unlimited number of reasons and may impact the whole community, so customers are always encouraged to be prepared and have a plan to stay safe and comfortable during a power outage. Here are some tips to get you started:
Be Prepared for a Power Outage

Identify backup charging methods for phones and keep hard copies of emergency numbers.

Build or restock your emergency supply kit, including food, water, flashlights, a radio, fresh batteries, first aid supplies and cash.

If you own a backup generator, ensure it is ready to safely operate.

Plan for any medical needs like medications or devices.

Stay Safe During a Power Outage

Keep freezers and refrigerators closed.

Buy ice to keep food or medicines in coolers.

Use food supplies that do not require refrigeration.

Only use backup generators outdoors and away from windows

Disconnect appliances and electronics to avoid damage from electrical surges.

Use alternate plans for refrigerating medicines or power dependent medical devices.

Check on your neighbors.

Do not use your gas stove for heat.

Visit a community center location with power if heat or cold is extreme.

RPU does not provide back-up generation so having a back-up power system or other plan is important to ensure your health and welfare during outages.
