On the Job Training and Internships
The Riverside Workforce Development Center is linking residents with training, job placement and retention services while funding employers who hire local candidates. In 2010, the City (through ACS) hired three high tech employees using this program and received $14,000 for providing on the job training. The savings from the program helped justify the procurement of five Apple iPhones and six Google Android Smartphones. The skills training program enabled the City of Riverside applications team to develop advanced mobile applications including Riverside Resident Connect.
The City IT department internships provide on the job training and mentorships for client services, GIS, technical support, customer service, application development, network services and operations. Currently the City is working with six interns from UCR, Riverside Community College, Kaplan University, Cal Baptist University, La Sierra University and Cal State San Bernardino. In 2010 five interns received full time employment with local companies as a result of this program. SmartRiverside is working with City's colleges and high tech companies to replicate this intern program throughout the community.
