RIVERSIDE POLICE AND NAACP YOUTH COUNCIL PRESENT “BREAKING BREAD TOGETHER”

Riverside, CA – The Riverside Police Department and Riverside County NAACP Youth Council have once again collaborated for “Breaking Bread Together,” a dialogue series between African-American youth and Riverside Police Officers.  This year, youth and officers continue to discuss important issues and topics that will help build trust and improve public safety.

Three weeks ago, youth and officers met at a local church for a panel discussion.  Then just last week, they met again at the Riverside Police Department’s Magnolia Avenue station to continue the engagement, and the youth and parents were able to experience training scenarios and see demonstrations on different less lethal options used in de-escalation situations.

“Many youth have not had an opportunity before to just sit and talk with a police officer, let alone get a behind-the-scenes look at what we do,” stated Riverside Police Chief Larry Gonzalez.  “Through Breaking Bread Together, these conversations have been nothing short of amazing.”

The Breaking Bread Together series will wrap up this Wednesday, July 27th with a Unity Basketball Game and Resource Fair at Bordwell Park in Riverside.  From 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. that evening, there will be information and resource booths, public safety displays and law enforcement recruitment tables, food, and shaved ice for community members (while supplies last).  The main event will showcase an organized basketball game with youth and local law enforcement.

Sharron Lewis Campbell, 1st Vice President of the Riverside NAACP said, “The Riverside County NAACP Youth Council and Police Officers Basketball Game has been going on for eight years.  Besides having fun, the basketball game and Breaking Bread activities connect our youth and police officers on a personal level.”
