Current Situation
On September 17, 2026, at 2:16 a.m., the City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a first-alarm structure fire assignment in the 3400 block of 5th Street in Downtown Riverside. Units arrived on scene to find a second-story apartment fully involved in fire within a two-story residential apartment building. Two occupants were found hanging out of windows of an adjacent apartment, while additional occupants were found outside on the ground with injuries.
Units quickly rescued the residents from the windows and began treating the injured on the ground. Four AMR ambulances and the Breathing Support responded to the incident. Firefighters contained the fire to the structure of origin, and no additional apartments sustained fire damage. The apartment directly below the fire occupancy sustained water damage.
A total of four adults were displaced. The Red Cross was notified and will be assisting the displaced residents. Three dogs were found deceased, and two dogs were rescued. Riverside County Animal Control responded to the incident regarding the deceased dogs.
RPD assisted with traffic control at Lemon Street and 5th Street.
One firefighter was transported for treatment. Five civilians were also transported with injuries. Battalion 1 Stibal served as the Incident Commander.
