Current Situation
On September 3, 2025, at 6:27 p.m., the City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a first alarm structure fire at the University of California, Riverside’s North District Building C following reports of smoke on the fourth floor. Upon arrival, firefighters found the building in the process of being evacuated and observed smoke on both the third and fourth floors. A second alarm was requested to provide additional resources.
Fire personnel located the source of the fire in a dumpster inside the trash collection room, where the building’s fire sprinkler system had successfully contained the flames. Fire crews conducted ventilation operations on the affected floors to clear residual smoke.
UCR Campus Safety and the UCR Fire Marshal staff responded to the scene to support firefighting efforts. The building’s fire suppression system was shut down to control water flow from the activated sprinklers. Although the State Fire Marshal's Office was contacted for assistance, they were unavailable to respond. A City of Riverside Fire Department investigator conducted the fire investigation, which concluded with the cause of the fire classified as undetermined.
The building was returned to UCR officials with a fire watch established until the fire suppression system could be fully restored. No injuries to civilians or fire personnel were reported. Residents were able to return to the building.
