Current Situation
The City of Riverside Fire Department responded to a vegetation fire in the Santa Ana River Bottom to the rear of the water treatment plant and east of the Van Buren bridge. The first arriving engine company reported 30’ X 30’ fire in heavy vegetation and trees moving at a moderate rate of spread with the potential for 5 acres and difficult access. The City of Riverside and Cal-Fire operated in a unified command utilizing Engine Companies, Brush Trucks, and a Heli-tack crew for manpower and water drops. There were no threats to infrastructure or buildings. Crews worked several hours for extinguishment and overhaul the fire which had grown to approximately 1 acre. The cause of the fire was undetermined, but there was evidence of homeless activity. Battalion Chief Scott Richmond was the River Bottom Incident Commander.
