On Wednesday, January 27, 2021 at 6:44 a.m., The City of Riverside Fire Department responded a first alarm structure fire assignment to the 1300 Block of University Ave for reports of a commercial structure fire.  Firefighters arrived on scene to discover a boarded up commercial restaurant the old “Cask N’ Clever” at 1333 University Ave, with heavy smoke and fire coming from the structure.  Homeless occupants who are illegally camping in the structure were evacuating the structure.

A second alarm was requested and dispatched to the incident.  Firefighters performed an aggressive fire attack while performing a primary search due to reports of a possible homeless subject inside of the structure.  The primary search did locate any subjects inside the structure. Fire was knocked down and under control at 7:13 a.m., A total of 30 firefighters and four overhead personnel and four chief officers responded to the incident.
The Homeless Outreach Team has been notified.
Building and Safety, Fire Prevention and Code Enforcement are responding to the incident.

Fire Officials will be working with the property owner to secure the structure.

There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.  The estimated loss is at $300,000 with a save of $500,000.

The fire cause is undetermined after investigation due to numerous previous set fires within and around the structure.
