    Current Situation

(Recent updates are posted at the top of the Current Situation)

On January 11, 2020 at 8:35 a.m., The City of Riverside Fire Department dispatched a first alarm vegetation fire assignment to the rear of Fairmount Park next to the American Legion for reports of vegetation on fire.  Firefighters arrived to find a vegetation fire in underdeveloped area of Fairmount Park near the American Legion.  A homeless encampment was on fire and burning the surrounding vegetation.  A second alarm vegetation fire response was initiated due to the distance of the fire burning from where firefighters had to make access and put in place an 800’ hose lay. The fire was burning a 40’ x 40’ spot in heavy vegetation fuels.  The fire was brought under control and contained.  A fire line perimeter was established.

The Riverside Police Department arrived on scene and assisted firefighters.  The fire cause was undetermined after investigation and there were no witnesses.  Firefighters were on scene for about two hours.  A total of 22 firefighters and one chief officer responded.  There were no firefighter or civilian injuries.
