City of Riverside Invites Community to “Ojos del Tiempo” Exhibit at SSgt. Salvador J. Lara Casa Blanca Library
Art and literature space will celebrate Latino artists and authors
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – The City of Riverside invites the community to enjoy the new “Ojos del Tiempo” art and literature space which celebrates Latino artists and authors at the SSgt. Salvador J. Lara Casa Blanca Library, 2985 Madison Street. The space will be unveiled at a ceremony at 11 a.m. on Thursday (4/2).
The exhibit, which translates to “Eyes of Time,” is designed to reflect the stories and culture of Latinos in Riverside, bringing to life the community’s history and creativity. It will feature bilingual stories and a museum-style installation on the history of the predominantly Mexican-American Casa Blanca neighborhood.
The event on Thursday is presented by City Councilmember Sean Mill, who represents the area; Supervisor Jose Medina, who represents Riverside; Friends of the Riverside Library; and the City of Riverside Library Department.
“We know that when kids see themselves reflected in their learning environment, it boosts their self-esteem, engagement, and academic success,” Mill said. “This installation is an effort to bring that to life with art, literature and other materials that reflect life in Casa Blanca and other Latino communities.”
The rotating art exhibits will feature local artists such as the Casa Blanca muralist Juan Navarro, Jesse Aleman, who creates art using succulent plants, and celebrated figures like Judy Baca and José Clemente Orozco. Authors whose work will be featured include Sandra Cisneros, Luis Alberto Urrea, Gloria Anzaldúa, and Reyna Grande.
