A Message from Mayor Pro Tem Erin Edwards: May 1

Published: 05/05/2020

The City of Riverside took steps today to clarify the relationship between the city’s declaration of a local emergency, the orders of the County Health Officer and the “stay at home” order from Gov. Gavin Newsom.

The effort was designed to avoid confusion about the orders and how they affect residents’ daily lives.

In a public service announcement, Mayor Pro Tem Erin Edwards explained that, while the City can pass orders more strict than the County or the State, it can never pass orders that are less strict.

That means residents of the City must follow any County orders, and residents of the County must follow the state order.

The City of Riverside declared a Local Emergency on March 13, which was ratified by the City Council on March 17 and remains in effect until terminated by the City Council.
