Portion of Lime Street Ceremonially Named to “Captain Tim Strack Parkway” to Honor Fallen Firefighter
Ceremonial renaming of Lime between 3rd and 14th streets does not require change of stationery
RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A portion of Lime Street downtown will also be known as “Captain Tim Strack Parkway” to honor the fallen firefighter following the City Council’s unanimous approval of a ceremonial naming that will not require homes or businesses to change their stationery.
The ceremonial naming of the portion of Lime between 3rd and 14th streets was proposed by Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson and City Councilmember Philip Falcone, who represents the downtown area, to honor Strack for his service to the city.
“Riversiders and people around the state are safer because of Tim Strack’s advocacy on behalf of the fire service and the firefighters who make up that service,” Lock Dawson said. “He was an actively involved member of the community who is sorely missed.”
Strack was a member of the Riverside Fire Department for 28 years before his death in April 2023. He held many leadership roles with the department, including President of the Riverside City Firefighters’ Association Local 1067 for about a fifth of the organization’s 100-year history. He is the longest-serving president of the organization and considered by many to have been the most effective.
Strack also was deeply involved in both the local Riverside community and the fire service across the state and the nation. He advocated for legislation that improved the lives and safety of firefighters and residents and business owners across California and the nation.
“Tim Strack lived a hero’s life here in Riverside,” Falcone said. “His dedication to the Riverside Firefighters’ Association was unmatched, as was his commitment to the fire service across California.”
Notice of the proposed change was provided beforehand to the Riverside Police Department, Riverside County Sheriff’s Department, Riverside Downtown Partnership, Downtown Area Neighborhood Alliance, the U.S. Postal Service and other organizations. All the contacted organizations were either supportive or neutral.
Signs that will denote the ceremonial renaming will cost an estimated $10,207. The signs will display the official name of Lime Street with the ceremonial renaming of “Captain Tim Strack Parkway” in smaller letters underneath. Because Lime Street will remain the official name of the street, people or businesses with an address on Lime Street will continue getting their mail as usual.
