District Facts:
- Alvord Elementary School opened February 5, 1896 on the current site of Alvord Continuation High School.
- Was named for William Alvord, a former mayor of San Francisco in the 1870’s and president of the Bank of California.
- On July 1, 1908, the Riverside County Board of Trustees established the Alvord School District.
- Alvord School District became Alvord Unified School District in 1960.
- Encompasses the western portion of the City of Riverside, some unincorporated areas of the County of Riverside and a small eastern portion of the City of Corona.
- Consists of 14 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, 2 comprehensive high schools, 1 continuation high school and 1 alternative education center.
- Approximately 20,000 students enrolled, K-12.
- Constructing a third comprehensive high school, Hillcrest High School on Indiana Avenue at Pierce, scheduled to open for the 2012-2013 school year.
- Alvord's Mission is to prepare students with the skills necessary to become successful and contributing members of society!
- Arizona Middle School, La Sierra High School, and Norte Vista High School are National Demonstration Schools for the AVID Program.
- Partners with Business and Industry partners for high school academies.
- Has an International Baccalaureate Program at Norte Vista High School.
- Has the only National Certification School with Distinction in the US.
