NOTE: Due to an increase in current CCW Permit applications the process is currently taking over a year to process.
Overview
The Chief of Police is given the statutory discretion to issue a license to carry a firearm to residents within the community (Penal Code § 26150; Penal Code § 26155). The Riverside Police Department provides a written process for the application and issuance of such licenses. Pursuant to Penal Code § 26160, this policy shall be made accessible to the public.
Application Process
- Please read all of these instructions carefully prior to completing the application.
- You MUST live in the City of Riverside to apply for this license. The residency requirement will be fulfilled upon presentation of a valid California Identification Card and/or a valid California Driver’s license and proof of residency bearing the applicant’s name and current address (for example: copy of current utility bill).
- Fill out sections 1 through 8 of the California Department of Justice (DOJ) standard application for a license to carry a concealed weapon (CCW) completely.
- Additional documents you will be required to provide with application:
- Proof of ownership and registration of each weapon listed on application.
- Three (3) signed letters of character reference from individuals other than relatives.
- Upon completion of the above, you can contact Personnel at 951-826-5235 for an appointment to be fingerprinted and pay the necessary fees (see fee schedule.) Payment must be made in the form of a money order, certified check, cashier’s check or Visa/Mastercard. All fees received are NON-REFUNDABLE.
- Upon receipt of fingerprint clearance from DOJ, you will be contacted by a representative from the Riverside Police Department Personnel Bureau with further instructions to complete the following:
- Personal Interview. You will be notified in writing of the status of your application following your personal interview.
- You will be required to complete a 16 hour California Concealed Carry Weapons (CCW) Course approved by the Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training.
- You will be required to contact “The Counseling Team” for your Psychological Exam.
- You will be required to qualify with each of your registered weapons with the Riverside Police Department Rangemaster.
- Your application will be processed within 90 days from the date of receipt or 30 days after the Criminal Background check has been completed by DOJ and all certifications have been received.
