What Are ADUs and JADUs?

ADUs (also called granny flats or casitas) are small, self-contained housing units with their own kitchen, bathroom, living space, and separate entrance.

JADUs are smaller units, typically converted from existing space in a home. They have a kitchen and may share a bathroom with the main house.

ADUs and JADUs expand housing options, blending with local neighborhoods while offering rental opportunities for renters and extra income for homeowners—boosting housing availability and affordability in Riverside.

There are two routes for the ADU process, depending on your needs:

Custom ADU Plans:
Work with a licensed professional to design & submit personalized plans for your ADU or JADU.

Permit-Ready ADU Plans:
Use pre-approved, customizable plans for a faster, more cost-effective process.

Both options go through the standard building permit review, but the path you choose depends on whether you prefer a fully custom design or a quicker, streamlined approach.
