Commercial Fee and Penalty
Date Adopted: April 22, 2025
The City Council adopted a new Commercial Fee and Penalty structure to support compliance with Senate Bill (SB) 1383, California’s landmark legislation aimed at reducing organic waste in landfills and curbing climate pollutants. This fee structure also helps recover costs associated with added services rendered due to improper waste handling by commercial customers.
Under SB 1383, the City is mandated to implement strict waste diversion practices, including the separation of recyclables and organic materials from landfill waste. Failure to comply not only jeopardizes the City’s environmental goals but also subjects it to significant regulatory penalties.
The Commercial Fee and Penalty structure is designed to promote responsible disposal practices, ensure cost recovery for added services rendered, and maintain compliance with state mandates. Through proper waste separation and cooperation with established guidelines, commercial customers can help the City meet its SB 1383 goals, protect the environment, and support a more efficient and equitable solid waste system for all.
Educational outreach and technical assistance will be provided to help businesses understand and meet the new requirements, avoid unnecessary charges, and improve participation in recycling and organics programs.
